1. What level is this subject?

This guide uses Biology for University Study (IFD) as the example, but the same thinking applies across NCC Education foundation subjects.

Level:

  • IFD (International Foundation Diploma)
  • Academic standard: Comparable to UK A-Levels / pre-university foundation
  • Who it’s for: Students preparing for direct university entry

Passing the IFD means you are academically prepared to progress into degree programmes worldwide, across the UK, Europe, Australia, and beyond.

2. First thing to know: these questions are designed to be fair

One of the biggest surprises students have when they open an NCC Education paper is this:

“These questions are… actually friendly.”

They are not trick questions.
They do not rely on guessing.
They are designed to test understanding, not memory dumps.

If you understand:

  • what a concept does
  • why a structure exists
  • how a process works step by step

You are already most of the way there.

3. How the paper is structured (and how to score in each part)

Using the Biology IFD paper as an example, the exam is split into three clear sections.

Section A: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

24 questions | 24 marks

This section checks core understanding, not trick logic.

What the examiners are testing

  • Do you recognise key terms?
  • Do you understand basic functions?
  • Can you link a structure to its role?

Example style (simplified):

Which organelle houses genetic material?
a) Cell membrane
b) Nucleus
c) Cytoplasm
d) Mitochondria

How to score well

  • Don’t rush. Read the full question.
  • Eliminate answers you know are wrong.
  • Most questions reward basic clarity, not advanced theory.

If you revise definitions properly, this is one of the easiest mark-scoring sections.

Section B: Short Answer Questions

21 questions | 45 marks

This is where many students do better than expected.

What the examiners are looking for

  • Clear explanations in simple language
  • Correct use of key terms
  • Short, focused points (not essays)

Example style (simplified):

State the function of mitochondria and their impact in eukaryotic cells. (2 marks)

What this tells you

  • One mark = one clear idea
  • No long paragraphs needed
  • Bullet-point thinking works

How to score well

  • Answer exactly what is asked
  • Match your number of points to the marks
  • Use terms you’ve seen in class or notes

You don’t need fancy wording. You need accurate understanding.

Section C: Structured / Longer Questions

7 questions | 31 marks

This section sounds scary, but it’s actually very structured.

What the examiners want

  • Step-by-step explanation
  • Logical flow
  • Correct use of diagrams or models (where relevant)

Example style (simplified):

In four key points, describe the structure of haemoglobin.

Notice the phrase “four key points.”
They are literally telling you how to score the marks.

How to score well

  • Count your points
  • Keep each point distinct
  • Explain, don’t memorise paragraphs

This section rewards students who understand how ideas connect, not those who memorise essays.

4. What does “doing well” actually mean?

Here’s the part students (and parents) should pay attention to.

  • 70% and above = Distinction
  • Distinction shows strong academic readiness
  • Passing the IFD qualifies you for university entry pathways worldwide

This is not a dead-end qualification.
It is designed as a launchpad into degree programmes.

5. Why NCC Education subjects feel different

A key difference with NCC Education is how assessment is designed.

Business & Computing pathways

  • 100% coursework-based
  • No final exams
  • Assessed through:
    • Assignments
    • Reports
    • Applied projects
    • Case-based work

This suits students who:

  • Learn better by doing
  • Struggle with exam pressure
  • Want practical, university-style assessment early

It also mirrors how many universities assess students, making the transition smoother.

6. Final advice to students

If you’re worried about difficulty, here’s the honest truth:

If you:

  • Attend classes consistently (online or on-campus)
  • Understand concepts instead of memorising
  • Practise explaining ideas in your own words

You are already set up to score well.

NCC Education exams are not designed to trap students.
They are designed to show readiness for university.

And once you see that, the paper stops feeling intimidating and starts feeling achievable.
